  • Stony Brook Environmental Conservancy (SBEC)

    Our Mission
The Stony Brook Environmental Conservancy (SBEC) is a community based non-profit organization whose mission is to help preserve, protect and enhance the unique environmental heritage of the greater Stony Brook area. The SBEC works to ensure that the outstanding natural assets contained within its parks, forests, lakes, preserves, open spaces, farmlands, wetlands and marine waters are preserved for all time.

    Who runs the SBEC?
The conservancy is governed by an elected
Board of Directors that includes community leaders, scientists, educators, environmental consultants, university alumni and students.

What are some of our activities?
SBEC educates and informs the public and students of all ages through newsletters, talks on the natural and human history of the region, scientific seminars, short courses, field trips, guided walks, cycling and kayaking tours.

Are we affiliated with other similar groups?
The SBEC is independent. From time to time we may affiliate ourselves with certain activities of other community groups or organizations, when the board feels this serves the best interests of the Conservancy. SBEC is non-partisan and is not affiliated with any political party.

What is our sphere of influence?
Stony Brook is the center or locus of the activities of the SBEC, however it is not necessarily constrained by the geographical boundaries of the Stony Brook community or postal district.

What is our relationship with the university?
We are located in a beautiful and historic university town. Many of our members work, study at, or are alumni of Stony Brook University, the largest employer and institute of higher learning on Long Island. Although the Conservancy is an independent community-based organization, Conservancy members interact with campus administrators in helping to identify and preserve the valuable historical, ecological and geological features of campus lands. We assist in developing academic and recreational uses and enjoyment of the campus environment as a part of the overall mission of the Conservancy.
