    About
    Clara’s Woods
    An 89 acre maturing forest located in the southwest corner of campus. It is the largest remaining contiguous forest in central Long Island. It contains a number of walkways and is used for field trips for university courses and activities.
    Health Science Center
    A length of forest acting as a buffer zone between Nicolls Rd and the university Health Sciences Center.
    Ashley Schiff Memorial Forest Park
    26 acres of woodland set aside to honor Dr. Ashley Schiff, a popular professor and naturalist who died in 1969. It is home to a variety of plants and animals including vulnerable native species and is used by a number of university courses. The preserve is easily accessed through pathways located on South Loop Rd, across from Roth Quad and immediately north of Nassau Hall near the Marine Sciences Research Center.
    Dental School Woods
    A strip of woods located along South Drive, opposite the main entrance to the Dental School. These woods act as a buffer between the campus and the adjacent residential community.
    Campus Main Entrance
    This triangular piece of woods contains a ground lease for possible construction of a commercial hotel and ground level parking lot.
    St George Golf Club
    A long stretch of forest acting as a buffer between the golf course and Nicoll’s Rd.
    North Campus Buffer Strip
    An elongated strip of woods, that terminates near the northern entrance to campus. The southern section is non-landscaped woodland containing Lake Briana. The northern section near the campus entrance is landscaped with flowering shrubs and bushes and is home to the campus sewage pumping station.
    Flowerfield
    This land is owned by the Gyrodyne Corporation. It is a mix of forests, meadows, open space and a low density industrial park.

    Privately owned agricultural land protected from development by a Suffolk County-held covenant.

    The Nature Conservancy Easement
    An 18-foot wide strip of land ending in a small triangular shaped segment of wetland, this provides walking access from harbor road to the south shore of Stony Brook harbor.
    East Farm Preserve
    Former farmland, now owned by The Nature Conservancy.
    Paul Simons Memorial Preserve
    This preserve is comprised of 5 contiguous parcels of land. The north west section, known as Avalon, and is located next to the Stony Brook Mill Pond.
    Lake Briana
    Lake Briana is composed of two water recharge basins located west of Nicoll’s Road on Stony Brook University campus property. Over the years these basins have acquired a beauty of their own and are now surrounded by dense foliage and inhabited by a variety of birds and fish. It has recently been declared a protected wetland by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
