Old King's Highway
Old King's
Highway
During colonial times there were three trails constructed along Long
Island named North Country Road, Middle Country Road and South Country
Road. North Country Road is also known as Highway 25A. A small portion
of the original King's Highway cuts through the northwestern corner of
Stony Brook University campus. The Conservancy believes that this
remaining segment should be protected as a historic road, signposted as
a state historical highway and its location identified for the public
to visit.
Historical Maps:
1. Section of USGS 15' series map of Setauket. Surveyed 1902, published 1904. The Stony Brook segment of the Old Kings Highway is marked with the green arrow. The only surviving section is near where the highway crosses the LIRR tracks (red arrow) Reference
2. Section of USGS 15' series map of Stony Brook. Surveyed 1955-6. The Stony Brook segment of the Old Kings Highway has disappeared, but Flowerfield now appears on the map. Note there is no Nicolls Rd nor Stony Brook University campus. Reference
3. Seventies' era USGS 15' series map of the Stony Brook region. The university campus is being built; no trace of the Old King's Highway remains.
Directions:
From 347(Nesconset Hwy), take Stony Brook Rd. heading north. After
about 2.5 miles, proceed down the winding, wooded valley, turning right
into Dogwood Dr. Proceed to the junction with Mount Road. Park
here (see map.)
Walk
along pebble path (walking southwestward, respecting private property
to your left) for 50 yards. Continue on forest trail towards the Long
Island Railroad tracks. This small section is the sole remaining piece
of the Old King's Highway in a near-natural state. Notice how the grade
of the trail has been smoothed to allow easy passage of horses-drawn
wagons. The trail was originally constructed 18 ft wide and stretched
all the way to Brooklyn (still known as King's Highway).
Proceeding in the opposite
direction, Mount Rd. ends at the boundary line of the Stony Brook
University campus. The trail originally continued northwestward and
joined back to the present highway 25A west of the Stony Brook train
station. This segment of the trail has been obliterated by the
construction of campus residences and water sumps.
